Annual Picnic 2012

It was a gorgeous summer Saturday for our annual picnic on Saturday, July 28 at Raccoon River Park in West Des Moines. Our hundred-degree heat wave finally broke, and we had temps in the 80s for feasting and viewing of everyone’s cars. Our resident chef Don Van Lengen again didn’t disappoint with his savory selections of BBQ beef brisket and curry chicken. When arriving at this year’s Indian theme, Don says that he “wanted to take members to somewhere they wouldn’t necessarily try on their own.” And with last year’s Moroccan theme, members came out in force with their own interpretations of the theme including a delicious Indian rice pudding called kheer, brought by both Fred and Lynne Bell, and Manoj Tomar.
Also at the picnic, we raffled off the Bimmerworld 2011 M3 door. The winner of the “gently-used” door was Andy Hulse of Des Moines. With this raffle, we were able to raise $295 for the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, who is experiencing record numbers of animals in their care. This donation will help greatly toward care and placement of homeless animals in the Des Moines area. A big thank you to all who participated, and we hope to do something like this in the future.
